Ingredients

1/2 cup butter, softened1-1/2 cups sugar4 large egg whites, room temperature2 teaspoons vanilla extract2 cups all-purpose flour1 teaspoon baking powder1/2 teaspoon baking soda1/4 teaspoon salt1-1/3 cups buttermilk2-1/2 cups frosting of your choice

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350°. Grease and flour two 9-in. round baking pans. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, 5-7 minutes. Add egg whites, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beating well after each addition. Transfer to prepared pans.

Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 30-35 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely. Spread frosting between layers and over the top and sides of cake.
