Ingredients

2 granny smith apples, cored, peeled and chopped into 1/2-inch pieces

1 tbsp. lemon juice

1/4 c. packed light brown sugar

1 tsp. ground cinnamon

1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg

1/4 tsp. kosher salt

1 (17.3-ounce) package puff pastry (two sheets), thawed

Turbinado sugar for sprinkling, optional

Preparation

Step 1Preheat the oven to 400 and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Step 2In a medium bowl, combine chopped apples, lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir well to combine.Step 3Gently roll out puff pastry sheets onto a lightly floured surface. Cut each puff pastry sheet into 4 sections. Take 2 to 3 tablespoons of apple filling and put into each square. Fold dough over apple filling and use a fork to crimp and seal edges. Repeat the process to use up all the filling.Step 4Place turnovers onto prepared baking sheet and brush the tops with egg wash and sprinkle with turbinado sugar, if desired.Step 5Bake for 18 minutes or until turnovers are golden brown in color.

Inside the buttery, golden brown layers of pastry is a gooey apple-filled center, spiced to perfection! You can spice these up however you want, maybe with a bit of pumpkin pie spice or just a dash of cinnamon. The only thing we think is a must is a bit of cornstarch. The apples will leach a ton of liquid during cooking, so tossing them in a bit of cornstarch will help to turn that juice into delectable sauce. Tried this recipe?
