Ingredients
1 tsp. vegetable oil
1/2 lb. Italian sausage
1/4 c. all-purpose flour
2 c. whole milk
kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
cayenne pepper
1 can refrigerated biscuits (such as Pillsbury)
Egg wash, for brushing
Chopped fresh chives, for sprinkling
Preparation
Step 1Preheat oven to 375º and spray a baking dish with cooking spray. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Add sausage and cook, breaking up with the back of a spoon, until no longer pink. Sprinkle flour over sausage and stir to combine. Pour over milk and bring to a simmer. Season with salt, pepper and cayenne and cook until thick, 3 minutes. Set aside.Step 2Flatten each biscuit round about 1/4” thickness. Top each round with sausage gravy. Bring edges of dough together and pinch to seal. Place in prepared baking dish seam side-down.Step 3Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with chives and a pinch more of cayenne. Step 4Bake until biscuits are nicely golden, 22 to 24 minutes. Serve warm.
